On 23 October, we invite you to the opening of the Wrocław edition of With Love, Silybum marianum, following its first presentation in Warsaw as part of Warsaw Gallery Weekend.
The exhibition takes the milk thistle as its starting point: a plant that resists straightforward categorisation and challenges the boundaries between what is desirable and what is deemed unnecessary. Through diverse artistic practices, the exhibition explores how we classify the natural world, assign value to it, and weave it into our own stories.
The exhibition brings together works by six women artists who explore, in different ways, the relationships between nature and systems of value. Alicja Biała presents acid-etched brass paintings and bronze sculptures, examining the relationship between humans and the environment, as well as cultural ways of understanding the landscape. Drawing inspiration from poetry, Julita Goździk creates textile and sculptural objects, approaching fabric as a carrier of identity. Kasia Banasiak explores the folk tale in her paintings as a space where meanings and symbols from different mythologies collapse into one another, merging into an ambiguous whole. In Obierki (Peelings), Karina Marusińska turns her attention to what is usually regarded as waste or deemed worthless, challenging established hierarchies of utility. Anna Maria Zuzela presents two ceramic sculptures that draw on notions of prickliness and the Polish countryside, exploring beauty and its cultural conditioning. The Wrocław edition expands the exhibition with The Secret Garden, a film by Lebanese artist Nour Ouayda, in which plants become a starting point for a narrative about transformations of the urban landscape and the uncanny presence of the unfamiliar.
