Iza Opiełka (b. 1992) is a painter, graduate of the E. Geppert Academy of Art and Design in Wrocław, where in 2018 she defended her diploma work entitled Construction/Deconstruction at the Faculty of Painting and Sculpture. Co-founder and curator of Galeria JEST – a collective and an artist-run space that focuses on young artists’ practice. She lives and works in Wrocław.
She does abstract painting inspired by the visual codes inherent in electronic communication. She likes to use shreds of images from social networks, pop culture or Internet folklore, which she processes with graphic software to later transfer the multiplied, rescaled and layered forms onto paper templates that become the basis for her oil and acrylic canvases. This makes her paintings precise in their construction, yet expressive and teeming with energy. Over the past few years, she has developed her own, easily recognisable visual language, but she keeps testing its limits, experimenting with the colour palette or textures.
Her canvases were presented during exhibitions at Krupa Gallery, BWA Wrocław, Wrocław City Gallery, during the SURVIVAL Art Review, and recently at the Stefan Gierowski Foundation. She was a finalist of the Best Diplomas competition at the E. Geppert Academy of Art and Design in Wrocław and one of the laureates of the competition of artistic projects organised as part of the Wrocław 70/20 Symposium.
